October 21, 2017 -- Hermosa Storytellers -- Secrets and Second Chances

Lilah Pengra
portrayed Jennie Bigelow who came to Battle Creek Station to work as a housekeeper for her sister's widower, George Middleton, a veteran of the Indian Wars. Two months later, she shot and killed him. Middleton was buried in an unmarked grave in what is now called the Hermosa Abandoned Cemetery. Jennie served only five years of her 19 year sentence after a group of Hermosa citizens petitioned the governor to parole her in 1891. Eventually she married a wealthy widower in Ohio and died there in 1921.

Jared Rittberger told the story of his great grandfather, Gottlieb Rittberger, who was born in the German state of Wuerttemberg in 1867 and moved his large family directly to western South Dakota in 1908, settling seven miles west of Hermosa. Though neighbors doubted that such a large number of "Krauts" would last long on the barren rock they homesteaded, Gottlieb remained on the same place until his death in 1961 at the age of 94. Today, the same ranch is still operated by the fourth generation of Rittbergers.

Bob Phillip was born on a farm near Springview, Nebraska in 1921. The oldest active member of the Masonic Fraternal Organization in the United States, Bob has been a Mason for over 70 years. His stories of service in the US Navy during World War II and construction in the Midwest during the post-war years bring that era to life.

Donna Evjen lives near Fairburn on a small ranch with her husband, Les. As a youngster, Donna loved listening to both of her grandmothers tell what is was like when they were young. She still loves to hear people tell stories of their lives. Donna spoke on "Life's Stories Are Important -- Take Time to Listen."
